Jaisalmer is the only living fort city in the world — 3,000 people still live inside its walls. At sunset, the whole city turns the colour of fire. Nothing prepares you for it.
The city that glows golden
Jaisalmer sits at the edge of the Thar Desert — the world's 9th largest desert — and earns its name as the Golden City from the distinctive yellow sandstone that everything is built from.
Jaisalmer Fort — Sonar Quila — is one of India's greatest architectural achievements. Built in 1156 and rising 76 metres from the desert plain, it houses temples, havelis, and the descendants of those who built it. It glows amber at sunrise and deep gold at sunset.
The Sam Sand Dunes, 42 km from the city, are where you camp under the stars in the Thar. Camel safaris, jeep rides into the dunes, and that particular Rajasthani sky — more stars than darkness on a clear winter night.
The havelis of Jaisalmer — Patwon Ki Haveli, Nathmal Ki Haveli — are masterpieces of Rajput architecture. The detail in the sandstone latticework is so fine that natural light changes its appearance through the day. Jaisalmer rewards the slow traveller.
When to go to Jaisalmer
October — February
The undisputed best season. Cool desert nights, warm days, and the sand dunes at their most beautiful. The Desert Festival in January–February is spectacular — folk music, camel races, turban-tying contests under the dunes.
March — April
Getting warm but still very manageable. The fort is less crowded. March evenings are perfect for rooftop dinners with desert views. An underrated time to visit.
May — September
Extreme heat — temperatures reach 45–48°C in May and June. The desert doesn't offer much relief. July brings brief monsoon. This season is for the truly adventurous only. Most visitor infrastructure closes.
How to reach Jaisalmer
By Air
Jaisalmer Airport (JSA), 17 km from the city. Direct flights from Delhi (1.5 hrs) and seasonal services from Mumbai. This is the most comfortable option for the journey in.
By Train
Jaisalmer Railway Station is centrally located. The overnight train from Delhi (Jaisalmer Express, 16 hrs) is the classic way to arrive — and the desert sunrise from the train window is unforgettable.
By Road
From Jodhpur: 5 hours on NH125. From Bikaner: 4.5 hours. The drive through the Thar Desert is extraordinary — a straight highway through golden emptiness. Self-driving is a real experience here.
