Kasol is the kind of place that makes you cancel your return ticket. The Parvati River, the pine forests, the mountains looming on all sides — and a village that has welcomed wanderers with quiet warmth for decades.
Himalayan village, wanderer's heart
Kasol is a small village in the Parvati Valley — one of India's most beloved mountain retreats, and one of the world's most scenic riverside settings.
The Parvati River runs emerald-green alongside the village — fed by glaciers high above. The sound of it is constant, like a long exhale. Pine forests rise steeply on both sides. In winter, snow closes in. In spring, everything blooms at once.
Kasol is the base camp for some of Himachal's most spectacular treks — Kheerganga (7 km one way, with a natural hot spring at the top), Tosh, Pulga, and the legendary Pin Parvati Pass. Many travellers arrive for a day and stay for a week.
The village has a strong Israeli backpacker tradition — you'll find hummus and falafel in the cafés alongside Himachali dham. It's a genuinely cosmopolitan mountain village, which makes it unlike any other Himalayan destination.
When to go to Kasol
May — June & Sep — October
The ideal windows. May–June: wildflowers, clear trails, warm days. September–October: post-monsoon clarity, golden forests, the mountains at their sharpest. These are the seasons Kasol was made for.
December — February
Snow season. The village is magical under snow but treks are dangerous. Only for experienced winter travellers. The cafés are warm, the hot springs at Kheerganga are extraordinary.
July — August
Monsoon season. Heavy rainfall makes treks dangerous and the river floods. Landslides can block roads. Beautiful in an intense way — but not recommended for first-time visitors.
How to reach Kasol
By Air
Bhuntar Airport, Kullu (KUU), 30 km south. Flights from Delhi (1 hr) and Chandigarh. From Bhuntar, buses and taxis run to Kasol (1–1.5 hrs up mountain roads).
By Bus
HPTDC overnight buses run from Delhi's ISBT Kashmere Gate to Bhuntar or Bhuntar, connecting to Kasol. Private Volvo buses are comfortable — book on Redbus. Journey: ~14 hours overnight.
By Road
From Delhi: 13–14 hours via Chandigarh. From Manali: 2 hours. From Chandigarh: 8 hours. The NH21 mountain drive through Kullu Valley is one of India's most spectacular road journeys.
